My three YouTube channel names:
- ToddGates: my musician channel
- ToddAllenGates: where I discuss the ideas in my book "Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer"
- ToddAllenGates2: where I discuss the ideas in my book "Hunting, Gathering, & Videogames."

I chose the YouTube category of "Musician" because (1) that was my pre-parenthood career, and (2) by doing so, YouTube allows me the option to provide direct links to the amazon pages for my books (click on the books' pictures at the bottom of this channel description, under the word "Albums").

A book description of "Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer" (the basis for all the videos on this channel):

"Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer" is a Socratic dialogue between Scott Crates, a skeptic, and Chris Proselman, a Christian apologist who is handing out Judgment Day pamphlets that warn of the eternity of hellfire that awaits the unsaved. The skeptic acknowledges that eternal hellfire is something best avoided, but wants to know exactly why the Christian believes that his knowledge of the Divine is accurate. The book's three themes:

(1) "If you understand why you reject all the other religions, you'll understand why I reject yours." The skeptic starts out not by addressing atheism, but by tentatively accepting---for argument's sake---the premises that there IS a Creator of sorts, that this said-Creator has made some sort of communication effort with mankind, and that the fundamentalists are correct in their assessment that "one religion is from God, the rest are man-made." The two characters then turn to examining non-Christian religions, and the skeptic gets the proselytizer to pinpoint the telltale signs of the human authorship of foreign faiths by three criteria: (a) they're pieced together from pre-existing religions, (b) their holy laws are often based on irrational prejudices and erroneous conclusions about cause and effect, and (c) their stories contain inaccurate and earth-bound descriptions of the universe---stars that are tiny, a moon that shines its own light, a sun that orbits a flat and stationary earth, etc.

The conversation then turns to examining Christianity by the same light held up to the non-Christian religions. Use of this approach means the skeptic does not argue with the Christian, but instead forces the Christian to defend himself against his own accusations: his own description of a religion created not by an Almighty Architect of the Universe, but by the flawed mind of man.

(2) A secular marveling at humans' handiwork in the creation of the world's religions: the stunning range of creativity, cruelty, compassion, ingenuity, and absurdity. Included are scriptural passages from Bahaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism; as well as mythology and folklore from the Aztecs, the Babylonians, Egypt, Greece, Japan, Kenya, the Native Americans, Nigeria, the Pygmies, the Sumerians, the Vikings, and more.

(3) Largely through short essays located in the endnotes, Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer offers a gentle introduction to atheism: how the non-theistic approach of explaining our origins and ethics makes sense out of life with a clarity and coherence unmatched by any variety of theism.

4 of 4 (to IBERIANLOBO):

IBERIANLOBO: Why argue against something (religion) that is inherently irrational?

For hardcore true-believers, I agree that no argument will be of any use. But I still feel my approach may be useful for (a) providing arguments for why theists should not be allowed to influence state law, (b) helping out those who are undecided about their religious orientation, and (c) those whose skepticism is already firm, but are either looking for ways to organize their skeptical thoughts, or just interested in the way other skeptics express themselves. (It's for this last reason, for example, that I like watching other skeptics here on YouTube—they provide additional knowledge and perspectives.)

3 of 4 (to IBERIANLOBO):
The following is a dangerous combination: The notion that "faith" (acceptance without evidence or understanding) is a virtue
+
teaching people that such & such Holy Book is the Word of God
+
most of those Holy Books contain select verses that justify obliterating your enemy
+
modern nuclear technology.

As horrible as recent religious-based violence has been---the never-ending bloodshed in the Middle East, Kashmir, 9/11, Afghanistan, etc.---it could get much worse.

So it's a tricky subject---religion's consequences can be both life-saving and life-destroying. My compromise has not been to advocate skepticism of "a Creator," but only to introduce skepticism that "such & such text represent's God's Will."

2 of 4 (to IBERIANLOBO):
Yet because many people have so many clashing ideas about which religion is the "right" one, and even believers within one religion disagree with each other over key points about "God's" instructed for mankind (Shiites vs. Sunnis, Catholics vs. Protestants, etc.), religious belief can also be the cause of great suffering---suffering that affects believers and non-believers alike.

For religion's positive traits notwithstanding, religion also stifles critical thought, breeds contempt and intolerance, fuels terrorism and helps to start wars. Even here in America, religion affects laws--and adversely so--on education and marriage and medicine.

1 of 4:
IBERIANLOBO: Great work Todd.

Thanks!

IBERIANLOBO: Why try to invalidate something that seems to be necessary to human beings? (Theoretically, religion is not necessary....yet religious sentiment has not disappeared from the human experience)

I *do* agree that religion has many beneficial aspects (even if, as you note, not strictly "necessary"). Religion can provide believers with a feeling of community, unconditional love, and the sense that their lives have a divine place in God's plan; it can help people cope with the loss of loved ones and alleviate their own fears of death; and faith can give people extra incentives to be charitable (and with regular church attendance, probably more built-in opportunities for charity).

And if religion were nothing more than this, I would keep my skepticism completely to myself.

Great work Todd. As a former Christian turned "pagan", I appreciate rational arguments regarding religion. However, I have a cople of questions regarding atheism:

1. Why try to invalidate something that seems to be necessary to human beings? (Theoretically, religion is not necessary....yet religious sentiment has not dissapeared from the human experience)

2. Why argue against something (religion) that is inherently irrational or subjective by nature?

This is not a challenge, simply an inquiry. Thanks.

I am a recovering christian, and a professional musician. We have at least that in common. I enjoyed your harp performance. Very tasty. I've been a musician for 22 years, and I have a master of music degree, and I'm sayin that you are the real deal. I usually don't dig harmonica, but I dig what you did with it. I look forward to more gut-felt performances like that, my man. Peace.

Hello Todd. Thanks for taking the time to make all these videos. I'm slowly working my way through them and am really enjoying hearing your perspective. I hope one day I'll be able to buy a copy of your book!

Hi ToddAllenGates-I watched your posts as they came up a long time ago-and I thought they were brilliant. I try to use the Socratic Method whenever I debate theists or religious arguments. I have told my friends about your videos, and will continue to tell people about them. You're argumentative style is one of the best I have seen, and the way you carry out your arguments are equally magnificent.
